Nothing screams world-class, high-speed horse racing in Kentucky like deep-dish pizza in Denver! That’s right, Chi-Town’s signature cheese pie has a cousin in The Mile High City, and the folks over at the aptly-named Denver Deep Dish are celebrating this weekend’s Kentucky Derby with a pizza-eating contest.
Jim McGovern, owner and operator of the pizza joint, is hosting the second annual contest of man vs. ‘za, which has yet to see a victorious eater. He tells the Denver Westward: “We did it last year for the first time, and no one finished their pizza, but one guy came close, eating seven of the eight slices.” He goes on to give helpful tips for contestants, like eating a hearty breakfast to “prep your stomach.”
Winners of the timed competition get their pizza for free, a trophy and about two additional pants sizes. All participants receive a Denver Deep Dish Pizza t-shirt and a coupon for a free large, one-topping pizza that will likely be shared over your open casket.
But losers don’t have to fret even though they’ll have to cough up the dough (the green kind) for their pie. All proceeds go to the Rocky Mountain Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. So your heart will feel good while your tummy aches.
The Denver Deep Dish Pizza eating contest is part of the festivities at The Bar Car Derby Party Saturday, May 3. It begins at 3 p.m.
